History of Icaria (Common Account)

Attributed tradition. This page records Icaria's widely repeated Common Account. It is not an omniscient adjudication of every surviving chronicle.

The founders

In the familiar telling, four mortal heroes challenged and slew the Elder Dragon God, claimed the Heart of Creation and rose as the Founders of the Pantheon. They are celebrated as the first gods of Icaria.

Older chronicles do not all tell the victory in the same way. Some describe defeat and death where the Common Account remembers a triumph.

The dark age and the departure

The age of the gods was followed by a dark age in which divine power diminished and many gods departed, vanished or spent what remained of their power.

Icarian traditions disagree about the name the Exodus. Some apply it to the great dragon's flight, some to the gods who left the realm and some to both.
